Siem Reap outskirts have become one of the most popular places for tourists to visit in Southeast Asia.
The incredible Angkor Wat sits on the edge of the city, and this fabulous temple is one of the most famous and breathtaking structures in the world.
It was built in the 12th century when the Khmer civilisation was at its most powerful, and it has not lost any of its grandeur.
The city's outskirts have more to offer to the visitor than the city centre since they are also the location of Angkor Thom along with other ancient Khmer palaces and royal buildings.
The mountain of Phnom Dei is worth trekking up since there is another old temple dating back to the Khmer Empire at the summit, which offers spectacular views of the region.
Although somewhat overcrowded, Phsar Leu Thom Thmei, a market two kilometres outside of Siem Reap, is worth visiting and tourists can pick up a variety of souvenirs and trinkets here.
