Introduction to Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Set on the confluence of the Tonle Sap River and the mighty Mekong, Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative Southeast Asian destination. Improving rapidly after its devastation during the Khmer Rouge civil war, its infrastructure is gearing towards tourism as an economic fact of life. The few remaining French colonial structures are an elegant reminder of pre-1970 life here, with the wide boulevards and riverfront walkways lined with cafes, bars and restaurants. Standard tourist attractions are uncommon, but for those with a taste for 'edgy' holiday experiences, a stay here is well worthwhile. Phnom Penh hotels offer a variety of accommodation from extravagant newly-built hotels at high prices to homely backpacker guest house and mid-range or boutique-style lodgings. To the north of the National Museum is Street 178, nicknamed 'Artist Street' and packed with boutiques and Cambodian silk and craft shops. Other worthwhile sights are the Royal Palace with its Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, the Genocide Museum and the nearby Choeung Ek memorial to the infamous victims of the Killing Fields.
