Introduction to Phnom Penh - City Centre
Cambodia’s capital and biggest city of Phnom Penh is where the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers meet. The number of hotels in Phnom Penh city centre has increased dramatically during the past few years to accommodate the city’s even faster growing numbers of foreign tourists. The Riverfront area, close to most tourist attractions, is where much of the tourist action takes place. Phnom Penh still contains the wide boulevards, French colonial buildings, and sidewalk cafes which earned the city the title of 'Paris of the East.' The country’s dark past can be explored at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in a former prison, and at the Killings Fields of Choeung Ek. Visitors more interested in Cambodia’s golden age can learn of its heyday as a regional power at the National Museum. Evening river cruises on the Mekong are popular, as are shopping trips to the city’s markets, where bartering is a must.Visit our Phnom Penh Travel Guide
