Introduction to Kep - Beach
The small Cambodian coastal town of Kep, packed with history and natural beauty, is the capital of Kep Province and was the country's premier resort town until eclipsed 50 years ago by Sihanoukville. Nowadays, it's slowly gaining popularity again by more adventurous travellers who are rediscovering its pretty beach. Ruined French colonial villas, destroyed by the Khmer Rouge during the Civil War, line the hilly streets, half-hidden in overgrown greenery, a spooky reminder of the devastating conflict which deprived the country of an entire generation. Kep Beach is a crescent-shaped sandy haven on the South China Sea at the tip of the Kep Peninsula. The beach road is lined with seafood stalls and dining platforms and the shore itself is packed on weekends but almost deserted during the working week. Looming over the sand is Kep Mountain, popular with hikers and walkers for its spectacular jungle. Cave shrines and fascinating limestone formations are also set along the cliff base.
