Introduction to Kampong Thom, Cambodia
On the main route between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is the town of Kampong Thom, in the eponymous province which is the second largest in Cambodia. Kampong Thom is Khmer for 'Grand Port', so named because the town extends along the banks of the Stung Sen River. Part of the province is protected by Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve and borders Tonle Sap lake, where travellers can find a UNESCO protected complex containing the Sambor and Prei Kuk temples. There are many other pre-Angkorian structures in the region, including the significant temple of Prasat Andet, the monuments at Prey Pros and the famous Wat Kampong Thom temple. Santuk Mountain, located in Ko Koh village, is another stunning sight that should not be missed. Kampong Thom hotels put visitors right in the town, which is small but charming, and a perfect place to chat with local farmers and fishermen and enjoy the workings of typical Khmer life. This town is often the first stop on the route to the jungle plains of Preah Khan or Preah Vihear. Regardless of the final destination, Kampong Thom is a memorable part of the journey.other spellings: kampong thomhotels, kampong otel, hotell kampong tom, kampongthom hote
