One of Patagonia's largest and most energetic cities is Neuquen. With more than 300,000 residents, the city serves as the cultural and economic centre of the region. A great way to get a sense of Neuquen is to walk the length of Avenida Argentina until its terminus at Centennial Park. Along the way, visitors can see what the original Spanish colonial fort looked like at Government House, or browse the eclectic wares of local artisans in the shops off Roca Street. Right in the heart of the city is Central Park, an oasis of water, trees and walking paths. This is also the home of the Doctor Gregorio Alvarez Municipal History Museum, which provides the best look at the long history of the city. A nice thing to do around dusk is walk up to Centennial Park and look over the Balcony of the Valley, which has panoramic views over the entire city and surrounding valley below.
