Introduction to Mar del Plata - Beach
The coastal Argentinean city of Mar del Plata lies on the Atlantic Ocean, 400kms south of Buenos Aires. It's been a famous beachside resort since the 1920s and is now the largest such in the country, with hordes of tourists arriving in summer for its miles of sandy beaches. Punta Iglesia and Playa Grande are the most popular beaches, lined with Mar de Plata Beach hotels and resorts. Nearby Waikiki Beach on the outskirts is quieter, more relaxed and has a great surf school for the inexperienced. The total coastal area of the beaches here stretches for 46kms, with the water warmed by an undersea current originating off the coast of Brazil. All kinds of water sports are practiced here, with full facilities offered on most of the larger beaches. At a few of the beaches, swimmers are advised to watch out for flags warning of rip currents.
