Introduction to Calafate - Beach
Situated 80kms from the Porito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate is a small town which has grown to serve large numbers of people visiting the National Park of Los Glaciares. The town is located on the south shore of Lake Argentino and is an excellent place to begin any boat trip around the national park. Many guests stay in the city centre, but the beach area to the west of the town is also popular. Calafate Beach hotels are concentrated in and around the Paseo de la Costanera, which serves as the main beach road. This area is around two kilometres from the town centre and one of the best places to spot native Patagonian birds. Sunset is the best time to enjoy bird-spotting here or at Laguna Nimez, a 10-minute drive along the shoreline. Travellers can get here by flying to El Calafate's international airport, a 25-minute drive from the beaches. There are regular flights from Bariloche, Ushuaia and Buenos Aires.
