Introduction to Buenos Aires - San Martin
Plaza San Martin is situated at the end of Florida Street, a famous Buenos Aires street closed to motorised vehicles and renowned for its shopping. The neighbourhood surrounding this scenic square is usually called Retiro or San Martin. Retiro was originally established as an affluent neighbourhood filled with spectacular palaces belonging to aristocratic Buenos Aires families, and it remains one of the city's wealthiest districts to this day. San Martin hotels are some of the most expensive in Buenos Aires. Plaza San Martin visitors can relax under any of the park's more than 350 trees, which are especially beautiful after they fully bloom in September and November. Edificio Kavanagh, the first skyscraper ever constructed in Buenos Aires, stands nearby, and Retiro is also home to a museum describing the history of Buenos Aires immigration. Guided tours inside Palacio Paz, constructed as the intended home of famed Argentine general Jose de San Martin between 1904 and 1912, are especially recommended.Visit our Buenos Aires Travel Guide
