Introduction to Buenos Aires - Barrio Norte
Barrio Norte is one of the more affluent districts in the Argentinean capital, Buenos Aires. This informal district with around 200,000 residents consists of parts of the Recoleta, Palermo and Retiro districts. Retiro hosts the capital's main train station, situated around two kilometres from the district centre, Santa Fe Avenue. This was once the preferred shopping area for the city's elite, but nowadays it is home to modern apartment blocks and upscale restaurants. The thoroughfare is a popular destination among gay visitors and residents. The eight-hectare Las Heras Park provides plenty of greenery and recreation for the dense local population. Around 500m from the park, the National Fine Arts Museum has a European flavour. Parallel to Avenida Las Heras, Avenida Alvear features some of the city's most beautiful buildings, some of which now host foreign embassies.
